The week in AI: Google launches Gemini, Altman named TIME's CEO of the year
Plus: Meta's new image generator and real-time AI translator

Welcome to The Dispatch! We are the newsletter that keeps you informed about AI. Each Thursday, we aggregate the major developments in artificial intelligence; we pass along the news, useful resources, tools or services, and exciting projects in open source. Even if you aren’t an engineer, we’ll keep you in touch with what’s going on in AI.

Google quietly deployed its long-awaited large language model, Gemini, on Wednesday. The model will eventually be integrated into Google’s search engine, its ad products, the Chrome browser, and more. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has called Gemini the future of the company. Videos released by Google showcase Gemini solving multimodal tasks that involve complex reasoning. |
Gemini is more than a single AI model:
There’s a lighter version called Gemini Nano that is meant to be run natively and offline on Android, intended to make devices smarter and faster without needing an internet connection. The Pixel 8 Pro is the only Nano-compatible phone so far, but Google sees the new model as a core part of Android going forward.
Gemini Pro, the middle tier of the Gemini series, is now powering Google Bard and represents the “biggest and best upgrade yet” for Bard. It should be a marked improvement for just about everything Bard already does: summarizing, brainstorming, writing, etc. One distinct advantage of Gemini is its strength for multimodal applications with images, audio, and video. Gemini enables more interactive features like getting AI feedback on photos of design prototypes or homework problems.
Gemini Ultra is the most powerful version of the LLM and seems to be mostly designed for data centers and enterprise applications. It’s not out yet - release is expected next year. It will power “Bard Advanced”, so there’s definitely more upgrades to come for Bard.
Starting on December 13, developers and enterprise customers can access Gemini Pro via the Gemini API in Google AI Studio or Google Cloud Vertex AI. We’ll be reporting on use cases and capabilities next week.
The Beijing Internet Court has made a landmark ruling recognizing fully AI-generated images as protectable works under copyright law - a stark contrast to the US Copyright Office’s ruling back in February that AI-generated images do not have copyright protection because they “are not the product of human authorship”.
The Beijing court found that the human creator's inputs - even if only prompt selection and parameter adjustments - constituted adequate "originality" for copyright eligibility. Legal experts predict the decision will have far-reaching influence over future AI copyright disputes, and could position Chinese tech companies to reap the benefits of more lax regulation.
TIME Magazine has named OpenAI's Sam Altman CEO of the year for 2023, highlighting a tumultuous period marked by both significant achievements and dramatic internal strife. Despite being fired and then reinstated by the board within a chaotic five-day span, Altman has led OpenAI through numerous groundbreaking advancements. The profile delves into the complexities of Altman's leadership, revealing an influential yet contentious role within the tech industry. |
Amidst the internal upheaval, Altman’s vision for AI's beneficial impact on humanity remained a driving force - even as it raised questions about governance and ethical oversight in the rapidly evolving sector. CEO of the year is a new award from TIME; Taylor Swift was the magazine’s person of the year.
The New Yorker has published an extensive profile of Microsoft's relationship with OpenAI, particularly through the lens of the latter's recent board drama. The article details the crisis triggered by OpenAI's board's abrupt decision to fire CEO Sam Altman, a move that sent shockwaves through Microsoft given its significant investment and collaborative efforts with OpenAI. This sudden upheaval, stemming from internal tensions over Altman's leadership style, threatened the strategic partnership that had helped position Microsoft at the forefront of AI. The narrative follows Microsoft's response to stabilize the situation, highlighting the burgeoning high stakes game in AI.
IBM and Meta have launched the AI Alliance, an international community of over 50 organizations across industry, academia, and government collaborating to advance open, safe, and responsible AI development. Founding members include AMD, Cerebras, Cleveland Clinic, Cornell, Dartmouth, Dell, Intel, NASA, NSF, Red Hat, ServiceNow, Sony, Stability AI, UC Berkeley, University of Tokyo, and others.
The stated goal of the coalition is to advance open, safe, responsible AI by “bringing together a critical mass of compute, data, tools, and talent to accelerate open innovation" while "improving foundational capabilities, safety, security and trust in AI." While Meta may not profit directly from promoting open source tools, the open source approach could help it gain influence and help it counter makers of the leading closed AI models like ChatGPT.
